Immediate Help

If you have recently been raped or sexually assaulted make sure you go to a place where you feel safe. If you are not sure what you want to do, go along to your nearest Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) where you will receive support and advice. If you attend SARC through the police you can have a forensic and medication examination (including tests for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy). SARCs can store the forensic evidence. SARCs employ specially trained experienced professionals who can give you help and support you through the immediate trauma.

Information about the Hertfordshire SARC can be found here or you can reach them by phone on: 0808 178 4448 (Monday -Thursday 8am-4pm, Friday 8am-3.30pm)

If you can, take a friend that you can trust with you.

If you have recently been raped or sexually assaulted and you decide you do want to go to the SARC or to the police... if possible:

  • Do not wash
  • Do not brush your teeth
  • Do not have a cigarette
  • Do not eat or drink
  • Do not change your clothes (or if you do, keep them safely to one side)
  • Try not go to the toilet
  • Do not clear up anything from the area of the incident

Don't worry if you have already done some of these things: it is quite possible that there is still evidence to collect as well as injuries that can be documented. If you report to the police, SARC provides medical and emotional help. Medicals are not currently available for self referrals to SARC. However, you can still access emotional support and advice by self referral even if you are not reporting to the police. If you do not wish to see anyone, you can still preserve the evidence yourself. Putting your clothes (including e.g. sanitary pad) in a clean bag in the freezer can help preserve evidence, as can brushing your teeth and then freezing the toothbrush.
